Every wonder how to choose a sweet, delicious, and ready to eat watermelon at the market without having to slice into it? Here’s my secret in 3 easy steps:

STOP. And look for a watermelon that looks heavy. Feel free to lift up the watermelon of your choice to check out its weight. Ripe watermelons are made up of 90% water, so the heavier the watermelon is the better. Compare it to the other watermelons, the heavy one is the ripe one.

LOOK. Check the whole watermelon. Is it free from cuts, scars and bruises? Look at the bottom of the watermelon. This is the part that sat on the ground and exposed to the sun. The bottom should have a creamy yellowish spot not the greenish white color.

LISTEN. Tap on the watermelon and listen for a hollow sound. If it sounds hollow, it’s ripe. If you don’t hear the hallow sound, the watermelon still firm and unripe.
